Raleigh Officials Approve False Burglar Alarm Ordinance

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh officials hope to slash the number of false burglar alarms.

The Raleigh City Council unanimously approved an ordinance not only to reduce the number of false alarms, but also encourage proper maintenance of the systems. The ordinance requires registration for alarms and imposes fines for false alarms.

Last year, the Raleigh Police Department responded to more than 23,000 burglar alarms and 98 percent of those were false alarms.

The ordinance will be in effect March 1, 2004.
