Durham Woman Dies In House Fire

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police and fire investigators are investigating a fatal fire that occurred Sunday afternoon on Cheek Road in eastern Durham.
Firefighters found the body of an adult female, identified as Lillian Williams, in the back portion of a house at 2324 Cheek Road around 1 p.m.
Williams apparently died from smoke inhalation, according to a preliminary investigation.
Her body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.
Williams' grandson was playing outside when he noticed the fire shortly before 1 p.m. He ran across the street to a church to get help.
The cause of the fire still is not known.
