Former Johnston Detective Accused Of Making Up Details Of Arrest

Posted Updated

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A former Johnston County sheriff's detective is accused of lying on the job.

Investigators say Fulton Stanley claimed Charles Barefoot, of Benson, confessed to being part of a ring that stole dozens of tractors, trucks and other construction equipment.

Investigators now believe Stanley made the whole thing up.

Charges are still pending against Barefoot.

Stanley, who has since been fired, will appear before a Johnston County grand jury Nov. 17.
