FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Fort Bragg community was stunned by fatal accident Wednesday, when a civilian making a delivery at Womack Army Medical Center was impaled by a forklift.

According to Fort Bragg officers, Iliyas Askarov, 32, was dropping off cargo along the hospital's loading dock when he was hit by a forklift.

"It is very unfortunate," said LTC Billy Buckner, a Fort Bragg spokesperson. "Certainly our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."

Following an investigation Wednesday, the military determined the incident an accident. An investigation is typical when some of the facts are unclear and something so unusual happens on post.

"We want to make sure that we always learn from an incident like this, despite being very unfortunate for the family," Buckner said. "We just want to make sure that we have a safe environment for all of our workers," Buckner said, "whether it is civilian, contractors, or Department of the Army civilians who are here on the installation."

Askarov, a Russian immigrant, was working for a trucking company based in Canada. He is survived by his wife and 3-year-old daughter.
