Census Error Could Cost Chapel Hill

Posted October 17, 2003

— The town of Chapel Hill will receive less federal funding due to an error in the

2000 Census

Census takers mistakenly counted some University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students twice.

That error could cost the town as much as $250,000 in federal street funding because of Chapel Hill's smaller population.

Utah is also using the UNC-Chapel Hill miscount to fight for a congressional seat it lost to North Carolina based on population.
