Flag Controversy Keeps Some Person County Students Home

Posted Updated

PERSON COUNTY, N.C. — The latest wrinkle in Person County's confederate flag controversy kept hundreds of students home from school Friday.

At least 200 students checked out, and dozens more did not show up at all.

Person High School banned clothing with the Confederate flag after a rash of racial slurs. Rumors of bomb and gun threats spread after a contentious school board meeting Thursday night.

There were no incidents of violence at the school on Friday. School officials say they will have extra security on campus Monday, but they do not expect any problems.
