Missing Siler City Man Found Near Umstead Park

Posted Updated

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — A man believed to be missing in Umstead State Park has been found, and he reportedly is fine.

According to a spokesperson with the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Department, the man -- identified as Bobby Wayne Chappell -- is staying at an EconoLodge a couple miles from the park. Chappell said he lost the key to his scooter Wednesday morning and called a cab to take him to the hotel.

Park rangers found Chappell's moped near the Highway 70 entrance Wednesday morning.

Using search dogs, search crews from several law enforcement agencies, including the Durham County Sheriff's Office and Raleigh police, combed the area near where the scooter was found and along nearby trails.

Chappell called his family at Monday at 2 p.m. and said he was on his way home to Siler City. No one heard from him for four days.

Friends said Chappell was not familiar with Umstead Park.
