Scholarship Established For UNC Graduate Killed In Hit-And-Run

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill created a memorial scholarship in honor of a former student killed in a hit-and-run accident.

Stephen Gates, a UNC graduate and reporter for the Tar Heel Sports Network, died Saturday after being hit by an SUV near the I-40/I-85 interchange.

Investigators believe Gates had just stepped out of his vehicle and was partially in the road when he was hit and killed.

Two others face charges in connection with Gates' death.
