ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — A 20-year-old woman has been charged with felony hit-and-run after turning herself in to authorities Tuesday evening.
Emily Caveness was released to the custody of her parents.
The state Highway Patrol said Caveness was driving the SUV that hit University of North Carolina sports broadcaster Stephen Gates and that she later switched seats with another passenger.
Gates was struck when he stopped to fix a flat tire early Saturday morning. He died at the scene. Investigators said Gates' car was partially in the merge lane.
Rabah Samara, who was also charged with felony hit-and-run, drove the SUV away after the accident, according to the Highway Patrol.
