Progress Energy Will Not Be Sanctioned For Delivery Of Nuclear Waste

Posted Updated

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Progress Energy will not receive any fines or sanctions for a contaminated shipment of nuclear waste that traveled into Wake County.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the contamination was minor and did not pose any safety risk.

The shipment recently traveled from South Carolina to the Shearon Harris reactor in Wake County.

Progress Energy says shipments of spent nuclear fuel rods will be phased out by 2005.
