Durham Police File Charges In 3 Homicides

DURHAM, N,C. — Durham police investigators filed murder charges in three recent homicides on Tuesday.

Two of the three suspects are in custody.

Investigators arrested Jerrod Wright, 28, of 300 Avon Lake Drive, and charged him with murder in the shooting death of 23-year-old Jamal Charles.

Officers were called to 1610 Angier Avenue shortly after 6 p.m. on Monday. They found Charles lying in a driveway in front of the house. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Tuesday, investigators also upgraded charges against Antonio Ryals to murder after a beating victim, 50-year-old Larry Holland, died of his injuries.

Holland had been severely beaten during an argument with another man on Feb. 14 in the parking lot at 545 Liberty Street. Police said the man punched Holland in the face and stomped on his head.

Holland died last Friday.

Durham police investigators originally arrested Ryals, 24, of 323 Dowd Street, March 27, charging him with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Ryals remained in jail under bond until his arrest on the murder charge.

Investigators also are looking for Kirk Orlando Smith, 24, of 2112 Broad Street. Kirk has been charged with murder in the Sept. 20 shooting death of 25-year-old Devondre Peace of Durham.

Peace was shot to death while sitting in a minivan in the 1000 block of Rosedale Avenue. A friend who was trying to get him help drove him to the parking lot of Durham Police Headquarters, where Peace was pronounced dead.
