Man who shot Raleigh officer commits suicide during standoff
A man who shot a Raleigh police officer and engaged police in a standoff was found dead late Monday when officers stormed his Brier Creek apartment.
Posted — UpdatedPolice were notified around 11 a.m. that Steven Gregory Meyer, 48, was threatening suicide and violence, and officers tracked him down to his apartment at 9321 Bothwell St. Crisis negotiators talked to him for several hours, but he refused to come out of his apartment, police said.
When a tactical team tried to get inside shortly before 7:30 p.m., they found that the apartment door had been barricaded from the inside. Meyer fired several shots, but the officers didn't return fire, police said.
Officer Adam W. Young, 30, was shot multiple times and was taken to WakeMed, police said. Young, who has been with the Raleigh Police Department since June 2005, was stable early Tuesday, and his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police later fired tear gas into the apartment, but Meyer still didn't emerge. At about 11 p.m., the tactical team stormed the apartment, where members found Meyer dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Residents living nearby, who were forced to leave the apartment complex before 7:30 p.m., were then allowed to return home.
