Chapel Hill Announces Blocked Roads, Power Outages

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Motorists are advised to stay off the roads and keep streets clear as rains and wind gusts continue to pound the area. Downed power lines, tree limbs and debris have created road blockages at some areas, and town crews are working to clear debris as conditions allow.

Currently, trees block the intersections of:

  • McDade Street and Mitchell Lane
  • Franklin Street and Park Place>
  • Columbia Street and Chase Avenue
  • Electrical service has been disrupted at the traffic signals along Franklin Street from Boundary Street to Europa Drive. But signals at the Franklin-Estes Drive intersection and the Europa Drive-Fordham Boulevard intersection have been powered with generators. Town crews are working to install a generator at the Manning Drive-Fordham Boulevard intersection.

At 2 p.m., Duke Power officials estimated that 1,700 customers were without electrical service in Orange County. Sporadic outages are reported in Chapel Hill, including the Eastgate Shopping Center area.
