After eight months at UNC Hospitals, doctors let Jim Edwards go home.
Edwards had a big smile on his face as he spoke of going home, watching television and eating some of his favorite barbecue.
"Not too much sauce," he said, drawing laughter.
Edwards not only has regained his sense of humor; he has regained his life after nearly losing it.
"If it weren't for the good Lord, I probably wouldn't be here today," Edwards said, "along with the doctors' help.
"I was in bad shape when I first came here. I never thought I would live to see this day."
Edwards is blind and will have 24-hour care at home. But he couldn't wait to get home Friday.
"The first thing I'm going to do when I get home is see how that TV works, for one thing," he said. "It's had an eight-month rest."
Edwards' parents have been by his side the whole time, and he said he was extremely grateful to his doctors.
With this week being national rehabilitation week, seeing Edwards go home has been the highlight of his doctors' week.
