"One of the things we ask is that, when our defense gives us the ball on a turnover, our offense take it and put points on the board," head coach Bob Wolfe said.
The Cougars have scored lots of points -- 81 in three games, all of which Apex has won. Two reasons for that success are Johnson and Welch.
"Last year, we had more people who were out for themselves," Welch said. "This year, we are in it as a team and a family that does things together."
Said Johnson: "Last year, we had expectations, and people weren't playing together like this year. It is just a matter of having high expectations and being able to live up to them."
Welch has carried the ball for 350 yards, scoring four touchdowns. One year behind him is Johnson, a junior, who has broken off runs like the 72-yarder he had against Leesville.
Johnson averages 123 yards per game.
"The option depends on what the other team does," Johnson said. "Justin might have a big game, or it might somebody else, or it might be me. You just don't know what to expect going into a game with this offense."
The Cougars hope that unpredictability mixes up Millbrook Friday night in Raleigh.
