More Than 78,000 Citations Issued During Click It-Or-Ticket Campaign

RALEIGH, N.C. — More than 78,000 traffic and criminal citations were issued during the 10th anniversary

"Click It or Ticket" campaign,

including more than 17,000 for drivers and passengers who failed to buckle up.

Officers statewide conducted more than 4,200 checkpoints and stepped-up patrol during the campaign, which began Aug. 22 and ended Sept. 7. They cited more than 2,400 motorists for DWI violations.

Last week in North Carolina, officers wrote a total of 6,736 safety-belt and 667 child-passenger safety violations.

Counties with the highest number of safety-belt violations include Mecklenburg (1,455), Wake (462), Durham (359) and Buncombe (227).

Eleven additional counties recorded at least 100 safety-belt citations each, including Catawba (121), Cleveland (111), Davidson (125), Gaston (125), Guilford (109), Iredell (105), Johnston (105), Pitt (136), Robeson (134), Union (119) and Wayne (142).
