The first of 10 public meetings was held Monday evening at Leesville High School.
As many as 10,000 students will be reassigned when seven new schools open next year.
The school system has not decided which schools or neighborhoods will be affected. A detailed plan will be released in January and the school board is expected to vote in February.
In 1999, Wake County Schools faced a similar situation when seven new schools opened and more than 5,000 students were reassigned. That was about 5 percent of the total student population. Since then, about 3 percent of the student population has been reassigned each year.
