Cameras Used To Help Traffic Flow In Johnston County

Posted Updated

CLAYTON, N.C. — Instead of cameras catching red-light runners in Johnston County, the cameras are used to help motorists.

Machine Vision has black and white pixels that sense motion. The cameras send that information to a control box, which then changes the stoplight according to traffic.

Officials hope the new motion-detecting cameras will replace an underground loop system that is used to control traffic patterns. They malfunction frequently and are often dug up during construction.

In addition, Chapel Hill officials plan to use red-light cameras at two intersections starting on Tuesday. Raleigh, which already uses red light cameras at two intersections, plan to add more cameras next week.

Durham is still waiting on a contractor before installing traffic cameras. Fayetteville and Charlotte already use traffic cameras at intersections.
