NCCU Warns Of Con Artist Soliciting Funds For University

DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University

has issued a warning about a man who is misrepresenting himself as an agent of the university.

Officials said a man who identifies himself as Joe Starks is calling businesses and individuals and asking for money for the school.

Starks, who also uses the alias David Wilson, has told his victims that for a fee, they can purchase sponsorship packages with the NCCU Athletics Department that include having their company's name posted at O'Kelly Riddick Stadium.

The university said the man is not affiliated with the the school.

Some people have written the man checks, totalling $1,000, that have been cashed. The man has also asked for cash, according to school officials.

The man is described as African-American, appears to be in his mid-40s, with a thick mustache, and weighs about 200 pounds.

Please notify the NCCU Police Department at (919) 530-6106 or the Durham Police Department at (919) 560-4423 if you encounter any one fitting this description who claims to represent the NCCU Athletics Department.
