Probe Of Museum Finances Verifies Proper Spending

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A probe of a local museum's spending has verified that the spending was for capital purposes, Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker said.

As a related effect of the probe, there will be a restructuring of the museum staff.

The Raleigh Museum was forced to put its books on display Monday in front of Raleigh's City Council. Meeker had ordered council members to investigate the museum's financial bookkeeping.

In question was $530,000 in taxpayer money. The money was supposed to be used to buy and equip the museum's home, the Briggs Building downtown.

Tom McGuire of the Fletcher Foundation and City Manager Russell Allen were provided evidence proving that the museum money had been spent as intended.

After the probe, the museum's executive drector and an undisclosed number of board members have resigned or stepped down.

Meeker said the museum's private donations have been down, and it would like to re-establish relationships with its private donors.
