Willoughby Still Wants Charges Brought Against Teen For 2001 Wreck

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County District Attorney said he will try again to convince a grand jury to charge a teenager for a fatal wreck two years ago.

Colon Willoughby said Wednesday that 19-year-old Chris Petersen should be indicted for involuntary manslaughter. A grand jury has decided not to indict Petersen.

Willoughby said Petersen was racing with another driver on I-540 when the other car crashed, killing all four teens inside.

"I was shocked (Petersen was not indicted) because we thought the evidence was clear-cut that he was a participant in the race and that someone was killed as a result of the race, " Willoughby said. "And under North Carolina law, that would make him accountable."

The Wake County grand jury doesn't meet again for another two weeks.
