Durham Toddler Dies From Injuries After Being Struck By Van

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham toddler has died from injuries suffered when he was struck by a van Tuesday evening in a parking lot at the Oxford Manor housing complex.

According to police, the accident happened at 7:31 p.m. in a parking lot at 3709 Wiggins Street. A church van driven by Toney McClammy of Rhyn Court had pulled into the parking lot to pick up Bass' cousin to go to a church program. McClammy backed the van into a space in front of the cousin's apartment, but was told the cousin would not be attending the program.

As McClammy pulled out of the parking space, the van struck Bass, who was playing in the parking lot. McClammy told investigators he did not see 19-month-old Joshua Bass of Davidson Avenue.

Investigators said the van, which is owned by New Covenant United Holy Church, was not going fast when the accident occurred.

No charges have been filed. The accident remains under investigation.
