CEDAR GROVE, N.C. — Two people were killed Wednesday afternoon in what appears to be a robbery turned shooting at a thrift store in northern Orange County, a source close to the investigation told WRAL News.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Phillip Johnson, 52, was dead inside the Week In Treasures thrift shop. Alexander "Skip" Wade, 68, was taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham, where he died, authorities said.

Johnson owned the store, at 2800 Mill Creek Road in the Cedar Grove community, according to a relative. The source close to the investigation, who asked to remain anonymous, said Wade was a retired Orange County deputy.

Authorities said both men suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators said the cash register drawer was stolen.

No one is in custody, authorities said, and they are not releasing any information about possible suspects.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
