HENDERSON, N.C. — Two tractor-trailers and a van were involved in a fatal traffic accident in Vance County Sunday morning.

The accident occurred just after 4 a.m., on an on-ramp to I-85, at mile marker 215. Northbound I-85 was shut down for eight hours as rescuers worked on the scene.

According to reports, two people were killed when the van went through a guardrail and ended up at the bottom of an embankment. The tractor-trailers then slammed into each other and burst into flames.

AirCare reportedly could not respond because of fog. The Henderson Police Department, emergency personnel and several fire units all responded to the scene.
