Rocky Mount Group Recommends Citizens Committee Be Appointed To Discuss MLK Statue Controversy

Posted Updated

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A steering committee met Thursday to determine what to do about a controversial statue of Martin Luther King Jr., and it decided to make a recommendation to the Rocky Mount City Council to appoint a citizens committee.

The Citizens Committee would study the issues involving the statue, explore alternatives and make recommendations to the City Council on how to resolve the problem.

The Citizens Committee would be an 11-person committee. The mayor and each council member would appoint one person each, and three at-large members would represent the community.

The recommendation will be made at the council's next meeting Aug. 11.

Residents are upset about the statue. They say it looks nothing like the civil rights leader, and they want the statue fixed.

The city paid an Illinois artist $55,000 for the bronze statue.
