Authorities Seek Suspect In Murder Of Cumberland County Homeowner

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Walter Jones heard a sound outside his home early Thursday morning, went to check it out and ended up dead.

Now, Cumberland County investigators are trying to find the person who shot the retired Army Sergeant.

Jones' wife heard it all happen.

"I heard gunshots twice," Chun Jones said.

Chun Jones said she was in bed when Walter was shot outside their Grays Creek home. She heard her husband yelling out in pain but couldn't help him. She has muscular dystrophy and can't walk.

According to investigators, Walter confronted a burglar at the back door shortly after 1:30 a.m. The intruder shot him and took off.

Detectives think the suspect may have tried to enter through a window, which investigators have dusted for prints. The window isn't far from where Walter was shot.

Earlier this month, someone stole $2,000 from the couple's home. Chun said that's the last thing they talked about before Walter put her to bed.

"The last two weeks, we have lived in fear, scared every night," Chun said. "I asked him to make sure the windows were locked, the doors were locked."

Moments later, while securing the house, Walter was shot.

The former Army sergeant and ROTC instructor sold clothes at a South Carolina flea market. Detectives began their investigation by talking with his business associates.

"They might have suspected he had money," said Maj. Sam Pennica of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. "Or they might have been going to get the merchandise he stores in his garage."

After 22 years of marriage, Chun now faces life without Walter.Whatever the motive, Chun said the shooter didn't just kill her husband; he killed her, as well.

According to a police report, after the first burglary, detectives questioned a man who used to work for Walter, but did not arrest him.
