RALEIGH, N.C. — A construction accident is to blame for a power outage that affected parts of North Carolina State University and much of downtown Raleigh Wednesday afternoon.
A crane being used by a construction crew at an N.C. State apartment complex near Western Boulevard hit a power line just after 12:30 p.m., affecting power from the Method substation, which serves the campus and downtown.
Progress Energy said power was restored to more that 300 downtown Raleigh customers -- including state government buildings, the Wake County Courthouse and the
News and Observer
-- about 30 minutes later.
During the outage, Raleigh fire crews removed people trapped in an elevator at the courthouse.
Power was fully restored to the campus by 3:30 p.m.
