WILSON, N.C. — Firefighters in Wilson are working to determine the cause of a blaze that burned for more that eight hours Wednesday, destroying the building.

The fire, which was reported around 3 p.m., housed three businesses, including an insurance company and a doctor's office, at Nash Street and Airport Boulevard.

People working in the building called the Fire Department when they heard popping sounds in the walls.

The fire chief said the fire may have been burning in the walls long before crews arrived.

"We had crews trying to find the heat source, and within a matter of minutes, it moved to the attic and drove firefighters out of the building," Fire Chief Don Oliver said.

Insurance company owner Donnie Prince said he has a new appreciation for how his customers feel when he has to deliver bad news.

"I had pictures of my children in there. Just like if your office burned down. It's tough, it's pretty tough," he said.

No one was injured.

Crews remained at the scene overnight to douse hot spots. The fire chief said an electrical short is a possibility.
