WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities now say the human remains found last month in a wooded area off Highway 64 in Apex belong to a man in his 30's, probably of mixed race.
They also have determined that the body was buried there for at least a year. They are cross-referencing missing persons reports and doing DNA testing.
John Monroe, a forester for more than 20 years, said he found the remains off Old Jenks Road on July 10.
"I saw a shoe and noticed that was a little unusual and then walked about 20 feet further and noticed something white," Monroe said. "I suspected it could have been a skull.
"As I got closer, I noticed it was a human skull."
Monroe said he also found a cowboy boot, some clothes and more bones in that area.
