Fayetteville Officer Shoots Own Dog After Child Bitten

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A little boy was attacked by a dog belonging to a Fayetteville police officer, authorities said.

Officer Robert Ramirez, of the Fayetteville Police Department, was upstairs in his residence Sunday when he heard his wife and his 10-year-old son screaming. When Ramirez went downstairs, he noticed his wife struggling to get his pet Labrador retriever off of their son.

After being unable to stop his dog from charging his son, Ramirez said he grabbed his gun, a .357 Magnum, and shot the dog twice, killing the dog.

Ramirez's son sustained an injury to his left eye and his condition is unknown at this time.

Authorities said Ramirez is currently on military leave and is now on active duty status with the U.S. Army as a military policeman.
