Contractor Blows Up Cary Sewer Line

Posted Updated

CARY, N.C. — A private contractor accidentally blew up a sewer line in northwest Cary, causing a 35,900-gallon sewage spill, officials said.

The contractor was doing approved blasting in the Amberly development Monday afternoon and broke a 24-inch sewer transmission line and gravity line off Allforth Place, officials said.

Most of the waste flowed into a nearby retention pond, but some reached Amberly Lake, officials said. No fish kill has been observed.

The private contractor has completed temporary repairs to the collection system, and permanent repairs were expected to be complete by the end of Wednesday, officials said. The retention pond has been pumped out, and the waste has been returned to the Cary sewer system.
