Teens Confess To Staging Parking Lot Kidnapping

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Authorities said several Smithfield teenagers have confessed to staging an abduction in a Wal-Mart parking lot last week.

The teens, who are students at Selma High School, turned themselves in to Smithfield police Monday afternoon. According to police, their parents accompanied some of the students. Local radio station WMPM reported the alleged pranksters had told fellow students about their involvement in the incident and were urged to admit their guilt to authorities.

Two witnesses told police they saw three men kidnap another man from the Wal-Mart parking lot late Thursday evening and throw him into the trunk of a car before speeding away. Investigators said video from a parking lot surveillance camera appeared to confirm that story.

Police have not yet decided whether to press charges in the incident. No one was injured during the staged attack.
