Recent Duke Grad Injured In Hit-And-Run

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A recent Duke University graduate was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident late Friday evening, police said.

The accident happened about midnight on South LaSalle Street in front of the Belmont Apartments. Police said 22-year-old Caitlin V. Donnelly, of Towaco, N.J., was waiting for a taxi and crossed the street to check on a taxi that had arrived. After Donnelly learned that it was not the cab she had called, she turned to go back across LaSalle Street.

As she was crossing the street, a northbound car that had its headlights off struck her, said police. The driver did not brake and did not stop after the collision, according to investigators.

The vehicle was described as a dark-colored sedan, possibly a Honda or Nissan. The vehicle had damage to the front windshield and was missing the left side mirror. There is no description of the driver.

Donnelly, who graduated from Duke in May, was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of severe head injuries. She remained in critical condition Saturday evening.
