FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Thousands of people turned out to kick off
Operation Celebrate Freedom.
Country music star Darryl Worley entertained the crowd Thursday, singing his famous song, "Have You Forgotten." He said he hopes the troops are not forgotten this Independence Day.
"These people go out every day and lay their lives on the line so we can be safe and free and enjoy every freedom we have in the U.S.," Worley said during a break in his sound check for the concert.
Worley's free concert was one of the many events for soldiers, airmen and their families this weekend. The message that organizers of Operation Celebrate Freedom are trying to send is simple:
"Thank you," said George Breece, a member of the organizing committee. "We are glad to have you back and also a big 'Thank You' to their families."
This weekend, more than 80 businesses in the Cumberland County area will show their support for the troops. Some are offering discounts. Others are giving away free products. One financial firm decided to give away Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein urinal targets.
The events continue through Sunday, when nearly 50 churches will hold patriotic services.
