Base security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents stopped all cars at the All-American Access Control Point that didn't have a Defense Department decal to check identification, Tom McCollum, a spokesman for Fort Bragg and the XVIII Airborne Corps. Anyone suspected of having false identification was sent to a second checkpoint for more thorough screening, and 28 people were detained and turned over to U.S. Marshals, McCollum said.
In the past year, Fort Bragg security officers have detained more than 224 people, primarily construction workers, who attempted to gain access to the base under false pretenses, officials said.
Employers that knowingly hired these people can face criminal charges and be barred from holding a contract to work at Fort Bragg, officials said.
