Global Textile Alliance Picks Reidsville For New Plant

Posted September 21, 2006

— The Global Textile Alliance will open a textile mill in this Rockingham County home, creating 48 jobs over the next three years.

The additional textile jobs is a rare victory for the state, which had lost more than 49,000 textile-related jobs over the past five years, according to the National Council of Textile Organizations. Those losses have cut North Carolina's textile job rolls by nearly 50 percent.

The mill will be "technology driven" and produce mattress covers, according to Governor Mike Easley's office, which announced the new plant.

The GTA will receive a $100,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund as well as local incentives. One North Carolina Fund grants require a local match.

The company, which works with 15 different companies to develop products for upholstery and mattress ticking, or covers, said it would invest $12.3 million in the Reidsville facility.

"The Global Textile Alliance's decision to expand in North Carolina means more good-paying jobs for hard-working families in Rockingham County," Easley said in a statement. "We will continue to make the investments in education, infrastructure and workforce development to ensure manufacturing companies continue to grow and succeed in our state."

According to Easley's office, the GTA chose to move the mattress ticking business to North Carolina from Indonesia and China in order to eliminate duties, tariffs and fabric quotas as well as to capitalize on North Carolina's workforce.

GTA, which is based in Colfax, currently employs 52 workers.

"As a company, we are very excited about our current expansion plans," said Steven Graven, GTA's chief operating officer, in a statement. "The state of North Carolina along with the Rockingham County Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development has been great to work with and we are committed to bringing stable and exciting employment to the area."

The Reidsville jobs will pay an average wage of $580 a week plus benefits. The average Rockingham County wage is $547 plus benefits.
