"We can't say that all the stop signs will be eliminated at this point. We are definitely looking into trying to reduce the number of them and looking into ways that we could try to eliminate all of them, but we haven't reached that conclusion yet," DOT resident engineer Wiley Jones said.
As the I-40 widening moves through Durham County, chances are commuters may see stop signs again. Officials said ramps that have room for temporary acceleration lanes will not get stop signs. But in some spots like I-40 at Highway 55, officials said there is just not enough room.
Just last week, crews had to repair drainage grates damaged from the traffic shift involving the stop signs. Those repairs caused a 13-mile backup.
Crews installed the stop signs along I-40 at Highways 54 and 15-501 in April. The last stop sign was removed Saturday night, but new work that could involve the stop signs is 90 days away.
