WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper has been charged with driving while intoxicated after an early morning accident.
Investigators said Trooper Darjan N. Smith was off-duty and riding his personal motorcycle when he crashed at about 1:30 a.m. on Hare Road in Wayne County. Authorities said no other vehicles were involved.
Smith was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital, where he had surgery for his injuries. He was listed in serious condition Monday evening.
Based at the Highway Patrol's Wilson office, Smith will likely be placed on paid leave until an internal and criminal investigation is complete, a patrol spokesman said Monday.
"When we heard about (Smith's accident), we were very disappointed," said the spokesman, Lt. Everett Clendenin. "We're out there enforcing DWI laws, and to hear one of our members is involved allegedly in something like this -- it is disappointing. But we're going to do what's right."
Smith has been with the highway patrol since 2001.
