Boil-Water Alert Lifted In Kenly

Posted Updated

KENLY, N.C. — A boil-water alert was lifted on Sunday for water customers in the town of Kenly in Johnston County after water samples came back negative for the presence of dangerous bacteria.

Kenly officials said on Friday that coliform bacteria was detected in the town's water supply week. While coliform is not generally harmful itself, its presence is an indicator of other bacteria such as E. coli.

The alert was issued as a precaution while additional tests were conducted.

Water customers were advised to boil all water used for human consumption, including drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice and washing hands, for at least one minute. Infants younger than 6 months and pregnant women should use an alternate water supply if possible.

The alert was the third such alert in central North Carolina within the last two weeks. Earlier this month, Cary issued an order for town residents to boil water after E. coli was found in water samples taken from a residence on Coronado Way. On the same day, several towns in Moore County were also put under a boil-water alert.
