Former Johnston Elections Chief Charged With Embezzlement

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A former Johnston County elections director has been charged with embezzlement, authorities said.

Teresa Davis resigned in July after admitting she took more than $6,000 for her own use from candidate filing fees and notary charges paid to the county Board of Elections. Authorities said the theft spanned a five-year period.

Davis, who had been elections director since 1998, has repaid the money, but the State Bureau of Investigation this week charged her with nine counts of embezzlement by a public official.
