HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Police on Wednesday identified the 7-year-old boy killed Tuesday evening after he was struck by a sport utility vehicle backing out of a driveway.

Davis Davenport, of 4933 Gable Ridge Lane in the Sunset Ridge development in Holly Springs, was pronounced dead at WakeMed shortly after the 5:30 p.m. accident, police said.

David Doyle Bubb Jr., of Holly Springs, drove to Davenport's house to pick up his son before football practice, police said. Bubb's son and Davenport were friends, police said.

Somehow, Davenport wound up behind Bubb's SUV and was struck as Bubb backed out of the driveway, police said.

The accident remains under investigation.
