CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. — The state's rainfall is hurting North Carolina farmers. Farmers claim it is too wet to harvest hay.
John Etchison has a bumper hay crop in the field and because of the wet weather, it is still in the field.
"Normally by the Fourth of July, I'm cutting my second crop. This year, I haven't cut any," he said.
Some farmers cannot get equipment into the field to harvest. Farmers say the longer the hay sits, the more value it loses. Farmers say they need at least a week of dry weather to be able to get in the fields.
The state estimates last year's drought cost crop farmers nearly $400 million. There is no estimate on losses from this year's rain.
