Traffic Signal Needed On Part Of Moore Co. Roadway, Some Say

U.S. Highway 1 runs through the middle of the Pinebluff business district, and some residents have complained that drivers go too fast.

"It's supposed to be 45 (mph)," said longtime resident Mildred Carpenter "You sit on this porch, and you see them going 65 and 70."

Some believe drivers cannot see over the hill.

"(It's) so gradual, you don't realize it until you're on, and then, oh my goodness, traffic's coming everywhere," said Pinebluff Mayor Earlene McLamb.

McLamb, who has spent the last nine years trying to get a traffic light for the road, said the North Carolina Department of Transportation told her there is not enough traffic to warrant one.

"It's dangerous," McLamb said of the road. "I hold my breath."

Residents said they have counted dozens of accidents the last few years, including the most recent in June when state Highway Patrol Trooper C.V. Barrett crashed into another car and killed Randall Spink.

Barrett was trying to catch a speeder when he crashed. The Highway Patrol is still investigating the case.

Residents also have said there are many close calls that need to be factored into the decision for getting a traffic signal.

"You look up, and somebody almost hit somebody," said Quentin McLean, who works along U.S. 1. "It's just rough."
