CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The wife of a missing Chapel Hill attorney has filed a civil complaint against her husband.

Jan McCormick is now seeking alimony and distribution of the assets of her husband of 27 years, John McCormick.

Last week, the State Bureau of Investigation charged McCormick, who disappeared July 10, with embezzlement. According to the State Bar Association, more than $1 million is missing from McCormick's client accounts.

More charges could follow, Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall has said.

Authorities found McCormick's car abandoned at the Orange County entrance to Duke Forest, but investigators have said they do not suspect foul play.

Since his disappearance, McCormick has also been fired as the attorney for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro public schools. At his former law offices, his cases have been turned over to other attorneys.

Woodall said last week that his office has fielded at least 10 calls from people inquiring about their dealings with McCormick. He has referred them to the State Bar Association.

Anyone with information about McCormick's whereabouts should contact local authorities.
