Outlook Not Good For Ferry Project's Future

Currituck County leaders said the project has lost momentum.

Supporters argue that the ferry would cut travel time for students on the Outer Banks who go to mainland schools. To make it happen, Department of Transportation workers dredged a channel for the ferry without proper permits.

That resulted in federal charges against five workers, including former ferry division head Jerry Gaskill.

Last month, a jury decided Gaskill lied to investigators about the dredging.

Leaders plan to make a final decision on the ferry's future within two months.
