DURHAM, N.C. — Shirley Long has spent the last few days at her son Larry's bedside at Duke Hospital.
"It's a crushing feeling; it's a heart wrenching feeling," she said.
Police in Durham said that a driver hit the 12-year-old and then left him on the side of the road. His mother saw it all happen and watched the driver speed away.
Shirley Long was taking Larry and his friend on a Saturday bike ride along Guess Road near Ashfield Drive around 9 a.m. Just before they got to their destination, the mother saw something she couldn't believe.
"My mind was focused on how close (the driver) was and what was she doing," said Long. "She was weaving across."
Long said the car came incredibly close to her.
"The lady came by me -- I could feel the heat from her car," she said. "Once she passed me, I heard the thump."
Long said the driver left the road and knocked Larry into a ditch. Witnesses told Highway Patrol investigators that the driver never used her brakes and sped off.
Larry Long is now recovering from broken bones, nerve damage and some internal injuries.
Investigators plan to use information from witnesses about the car to track down the make and model, and they hope to eventually pinpoint the driver.
