Jury Sentences Ian Campbell To Life In Prison For Fiancee's Death

Campbell, who could have received the death penalty, was found guilty of first-degree murder Friday in Domenie's death. On Monday, Dorothy Goodwin, Domenie's mother, took the stand and told jurors how her daughter's murder has affected her life.

"I replay this crime in my mind's eye each minute of every day, and I can feel her fear," Goodwin said. "I don't see how Ian can live with himself."

Campbell cried as Goodwin was testifying on the stand.

"My daughter, Heather, one of the two greatest joys in my life, has been taken away from me," she said.

Both of Campbell's parents and his brothers asked jurors to spare him from a death sentence.

Aulden Campbell, Ian's father, said his son made a tragic mistake, but he does not deserve to die for it.

"He is my son, and I love him," he said. "He's not Jeffrey Dahmer or the Washington sniper."

Said Barbara Campbell, Ian's mother: "I passionately ask you to consider sparing my son's life and sparing those of us who love him any more pain."

Several jurors cried Monday during parts of the testimony. Jurors deliberated for about a hour and 15 minutes before reaching their decision.

Campbell was taken from the Wake County Jail to Raleigh's Central Prison. Campbell's lawyers have already filed an appeal for his conviction.
