Mary Cobbs, of Grant Forest Lane in Cary, said that a metal object, which was 10 inches by 5 inches, crashed through her roof and attic and landed in the sink of her bathroom around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday.
"I thought it was the guys out back putting up another development," Cobbs said. "Then I heard just glass shattering and thought, someone is in my house."
When she went upstairs to check out what happened, she found part of her master bathroom in shambles. Cobbs grabbed her camera and took pictures of the 7 1/2-pound piece of metal that looked like a brick.
The FAA said that the object might have been part of a brake assembly from a plane. They are not sure if it was a plane enroute to RDU International or if it was a plane at a higher altitude.
The FAA has collected information from radar and has concluded that there were a total of eight airplanes in this area between the times of 7:55 p.m. and 8:06 p.m.
The FAA was able to retrieve a serial number from the metal object and hopes to track the plane from the serial number and the radar information that was being collected.
Cobbs was home alone at the time and is relieved she wasn't hurt. She'd walked through the bathroom about 20 minutes before that metal crashed through the ceiling.
