New Owners To Shut Software Office In Durham, Lay Off Some 50 Workers

DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham operation of software firm

NetIQ

is being closed and its 50 or so software engineers and other employees are being laid off.

Attachmate

, a privately held software firm that recently acquired NetIQ, confirmed the office's closing and layoffs on Wednesday.

"We will be closing the office, although we don't have a set time yet," said Suzanne Smith, director of global public relations for Attachmate. She said the office is likely to shut down in the next three to six months.

"All the employees who are being affected by this have been notified," she added.

The developers will have a chance to continue working with the company, Smith said.

"They are welcome to apply for any opening position, and if there is a good fit then relocation is certainly an option," she added.

The Durham jobs are not being sent overseas, Smith said. "This certainly is not an example of off-shoring jobs. The will be kept in the United States," she added.

Attachmate, which is privately held, acquired NetIQ for $495 million. The deal closed on July 5.

NetIQ's business operations were focused in Houston, TX.

The Durham operation focused on NetIQ's AppsManager product and also voice over Internet protocol technology, according to Smith. NetIQ's primary emphasis is enterprise network security.
