CLAYTON, N.C. — A 72-year-old Clayton man is facing animal cruelty charges.
Jimmy Dykes Barnes is accused of wrapping a chain so tightly around his dog's neck that the animal's neck was bleeding, and the chain was digging into the dog's neck.
Neighbors told officers they suspected Barnes may have shot the dog last winter after it escaped from its pen.
Barnes was released from custody after signing a written statement promising to appear in court July 15 to face the charges.
